Choosing black wall lights

Black is the finish that disappears by day and does the work at night. Switched off it reads as a silhouette against the wall — a line and a circle — and it is the least demanding way to put a light where a light needs to be without adding another thing to look at.

It is also the one that carries a warm holder best. A black arm with a brass bulb holder is the most photographed combination in the range, because the brass reads as a deliberate detail rather than as the whole point. Copper does the same thing a shade warmer. Chrome keeps it monochrome.

On pale beech the contrast is at its sharpest and the shape is at its clearest. On walnut it goes tonal and softens into the wood. Both work; they just say different things. If the room already has black window frames, black handles or a dark kitchen, this is the finish that ties into what is there.
