Copper is the warmest metal here and the only one that changes. Left alone it darkens and settles into a deeper, browner tone over a few years — it ages rather than tarnishes, and a copper pendant looks better at five years old than at five weeks.
It is at its best against walnut, where the two dark warm materials sit together and the whole fitting recedes into a room that already has wood in it. On natural oak it does the opposite and stands out as the warmest thing in the frame. On beech the contrast is sharpest, because there is nothing else warm for it to blend into.
If a room already has copper pans, copper taps or a copper splashback, this is the finish that ties into what is there rather than adding a fourth metal to the argument.
