Wooden Wall Lights

Oak, beech and walnut wall lights. Every back plate is turned from solid timber — natural oak, pale beech or dark walnut, never veneer — and finished so the grain still reads. No two are quite the same.

Choosing wooden wall lights

Every light here is built on a disc turned from solid timber, not veneer and not a painted steel plate. It is the part that separates these from most wall lights at this price, and the part nobody photographs closely enough — so it is worth saying what the three woods actually do.

Natural oak is golden and open-grained, with a straight, obvious figure and the odd ray fleck. It is the warmest of the three and the safest with brass and copper. Beech is paler, finer and slightly pink, with a scattered fleck rather than a grain you can trace; it is the one that keeps a small room feeling light. Walnut is dark chocolate-brown, and the only one of the three with real figure in it — it makes the metal, whichever metal you pick, look like a deliberate decision.

Because the timber is solid, no two plates are identical. The grain that arrives will not be the grain in the photograph, and that is the honest trade for buying something turned rather than pressed.

Not sure which to pick? Tell me about the room and I’ll tell you what I’d do.
