About this light

A wall light built from four parts and nothing else: a disc of solid timber turned so the grain still reads, a swan neck arm bent from solid metal, a knurled bulb holder and a length of flex hidden behind the plate.

Choose the wood — natural oak, pale beech or dark walnut — then the arm and the holder independently. Matching both metals gives you the quiet, traditional version. Mixing them, brass on copper or copper on black, is the one people photograph.

Most go up in pairs as bedside wall lights, arm angled down over the pillow as a reading light; one on its own does the same job in a hallway or beside a reading chair. Call it a swan neck, a gooseneck or a wall sconce — it is the same fitting, with a wooden plate instead of a metal one.

Each is assembled to order in Britain and supplied ready for an electrician to wire. Takes any E27 bulb; the globe filament shown suits it best.

Questions people ask

Does it come with a bulb?

No — it takes any standard E27 screw-fit bulb, so you can pick the brightness and warmth you want. A large clear globe filament is what's shown in the photographs and what suits it best.

Can I mix the metals?

Yes, and plenty of people do. The arm and the bulb holder are chosen separately, so brass on copper or copper on black are both yours to have. Matching them gives you the quieter, more traditional version.

Will my light look exactly like the photograph?

The metalwork will. The wood won't, quite — every back plate is turned from solid timber, so the grain and the figure are different on each one. That's the part most people end up liking most.

How long does it take to arrive?

Nothing sits in a warehouse, so your light gets built when you order it. That takes 5–7 working days, then it goes out tracked by Royal Mail or a tracked courier.

Can I send it back if I change my mind?

Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to tell me you're cancelling and another 14 to get it back to me, and that applies even though it was made to order.

Is this a bedside light?

It's what most of them become. One either side of the bed, arm angled down, puts the light on the page rather than the ceiling — and frees the bedside table. Fit the plate roughly at shoulder height when you're sitting up in bed, usually 1.2–1.4 m from the floor; the arm reaches out 28 cm. More on bedside wall lights

Is a swan neck the same as a gooseneck or a sconce?

Near enough. Swan neck and gooseneck both describe the curved arm; sconce is just the older word for any light fixed to a wall. Search for any of the three and you'll find the same family of lights — this is the one with the turned wooden plate.

Do I need an electrician?

It's supplied ready to wire, but it's a mains fitting — so unless you're competent to do it yourself, installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician.
