These are the terms you buy under. They are written to be read, and none of them takes away a right the law gives you.
1. Who you are buying from
Urban Light Company is a trading name of Mark Broomfield, sole trader.
Not registered for VAT.
4 Shephards Place Reading RG8 7GB

2. When the contract is made
Placing an order is an offer to buy, not yet a contract. The contract comes into existence when I email you to confirm I am making your light. Stripe’s automatic payment receipt is confirmation that your money arrived — it is not, on its own, my acceptance of the order.
This matters in one situation only: if something has gone wrong at my end — the last one has just sold, or a price is obviously wrong — I can decline the order and refund you in full rather than being bound to a mistake. I will tell you why, promptly.
3. Prices
- Prices are in pounds sterling and are the price you pay.
- I am not VAT registered, so there is no VAT to add and none is charged.
- Delivery is £6.95 on top, shown clearly at checkout before you pay. Nothing else is added afterwards.
- The price is fixed at the moment I accept your order. If prices go up the next day, yours does not.
If a light is listed at an obviously wrong price — a decimal point in the wrong place — I will contact you before making it and give you the choice of paying the right price or having a full refund. I will not simply charge you more.
4. Payment
Payment is taken at checkout by Stripe, who handle the card details. I never see or store your card number. If a payment is declined the order does not proceed.
5. What you are getting
Each light is made by hand, one at a time, around a piece of solid oak. That means:
- The grain is never the same twice. Colour and figure vary from one base to the next. Photographs show a representative light, not the exact one you will receive.
- Colours shift between screens. A cord that looks mustard on one monitor may look ochre on another. If an exact shade matters, email me and I will send you a photograph in daylight before you order.
- Small marks are the point, not a defect. Tool marks, slight asymmetry and variation in the oak are characteristics of a handmade object. Something actually broken or badly finished is a different matter, and is covered on the returns page.
Measurements given are approximate and within normal tolerances for handmade work.
6. Delivery
UK only, £6.95 flat, typically 5 to 7 working days. The full detail — carriers, damage in transit, lost parcels — is on the delivery page, which forms part of these terms.
Risk passes to you when the light is delivered to the address you gave. Until then it is my problem.
7. Cancelling and returning
You have 14 days from delivery to change your mind, and separate, stronger rights if something is faulty. Both are set out in full on the returns page, which also forms part of these terms.
8. Electrical safety
This is the one section I would genuinely like you to read.
- Lights are supplied ready to wire but are not pre-wired to your ceiling rose or wall.
- Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician, in accordance with BS 7671.
- Unless a product page says otherwise, these lights are for indoor, dry locations only — not bathrooms, not outdoors, not anywhere they can get wet.
- Do not exceed the maximum bulb wattage stated on the product page.
- Do not modify the fitting. Rewiring, shortening the flex yourself or swapping components changes what you were sold and voids any claim against me for what happens next.
9. My liability to you
I do not, and legally cannot, exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by my negligence, for fraud, or for any of your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Nothing in these terms tries to.
Beyond that, my liability for anything arising out of an order is limited to what you paid for it, and I am not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable when the contract was made — a missed deadline on a room you were decorating, for instance.
These terms are written for consumers buying for personal use. If you are buying for a business, the statutory consumer rights above do not apply to you and my liability is limited to the price paid.
10. Things outside my control
If a supplier fails, a carrier strikes, or the workshop floods, I will tell you as soon as I know and give you the choice of waiting or taking a full refund. I will not simply go quiet.
11. If something goes wrong
Email info@urbanlightcompany.co.uk. I read my own email and I would rather fix a problem than have it become a review.
If we cannot resolve it between us, you can go to Citizens Advice, who can refer the matter to Trading Standards, or take a claim to the county court. You may also be able to raise a chargeback with your card issuer.
12. General
- If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands.
- Not enforcing something once does not mean I have given up the right to enforce it later.
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you can also bring a claim in your own courts.
- These terms may change, but the version that applies to your order is the one published when you placed it.
