Wooden Pendant Lights

Pendant lights on a wooden ceiling rose, turned from solid timber — natural oak, pale beech or dark walnut, never veneer — and finished so the grain still reads. No two are quite the same.

Choosing wooden pendant lights

A wooden ceiling rose is the whole idea here. Every one is turned from a solid block of timber, not pressed from veneer over board, and finished so the grain still reads under the light. It is the part of a pendant nobody usually looks at, which is exactly why it is worth making properly.

Natural oak is the warm middle: open-grained, pale gold, and the one that suits a period house. Beech is paler and much closer-grained, almost plain, and disappears into a white ceiling more completely than the other two. Walnut is the dark one, close-grained and chocolate-brown, and the only one that reads as a deliberate object against a white ceiling rather than as a fitting.

Because each rose is turned from real timber, no two come out identical — the grain does what the grain does. Choose the metal separately: brass and copper for warmth, chrome to keep it cool.
